Key benefits of Waterschools
  • 1
    Water and health

Water is vital. Water makes up 60 to 70 percent of our weight and is essential for almost every function in our body. As there is currently an increase in obesity rates in European children, opting for water rather than sweetened drinks helps to hydrate without taking in sugar or calories.

Drinking water in schools helps to prevent obesity and fillings.

  • 2
    Water and educational performance

Brain function is strongly influenced by hydration levels. Losing as little as 1 to 3 percent of the body’s water content can cause cognitive impairment, loss of concentration, tiredness and headaches. Staying hydrated is important for for proper brain performance.

    Waterschools support adequate water drinking.

  • 3
    Water and the environment

Plastic waste from disposable bottles constitutes a threat to our environment. Most European regions enjoy good access to high quality drinking water, meaning that single use plastic bottles can be replaced with tap water and reusable bottles.

Drinking tap water in school reduces single use plastic bottle waste and raises awareness of the quality of tap water.

WATERSCHOOLS

Water is vital. Without water, there is no life.

Water consumption is necessary for maintaining optimal health and brain function. People meet their fluid needs by drinking when thirsty, but especially in schools where there is often a lot going on, pupils may sometimes forget to drink even when they feel thirsty.

This is where the Erasmus+ project Waterschools project comes in. This project encourages and supports pupils to drink healthy tap water in their everyday life at school.
